Shooting a glock pistol?

When you shoot a Glock, how does the slide move all the way back before you press the slide release on. Does it only do this when you have run out of ammunition or, if you pull it back far enough, will it remain in this position while the gun is loaded? Also, what makes the slide stay back when it runs out of ammo?
