Can having an untreated kidney infection during pregnancy cause long term fetal damage?

When I was pregnant with my youngest son. I had severe abdominal pain that I kept going to my doctor for thinking it was labor pain. for 2 months they said it was not labor and sent me home. Finally on my last visit the midwife consulted the doctor and it was discovered I had a large amount of blood in my urine. The doctor wanted to admit me to the hospital but the midwife sent me home against his advice. My son was born 1 month later with a raging fever and infection and has been in and out of hospitals for the past 2 years. I was just wondering is there any medical connection between my infection and his? could it have compromised his immune system? He is unable to gain weight now as well. Also since then I have had 4 kidney infections and one I needed to be hospitalized for but I had absolutely none before that pregnancy. what is the connection there or is there one?
